Pleasant Surprises (3 to 3.5 star)
Alternatively: “Wait for Cable, or DVD rental, but don’t miss it.
“I just know that there’s something really special out there for me.”
This movie completely surprised me from the outset. I am not sure what I was expecting but I believe that this one suffered from the same bad trailers that some other sleepers did (compare the bad original trailer of Strange Days with the Sci-Fi channel’s awesome TV spot). In fact, since this DVD didn’t include the theatrical trailer, I had to go watch the one online to make sure that I wasn’t hallucinating the first time around. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect from this movie. It is pretty wierd, slow paced, and kind of cerebral and inarticulate at the same time, but there is something about this movie that made me smile. There are no actors in it that you will recognize, but there are some of the most funny moments that are presented in such a real way, that you can’t help but like this movie.
Reasons to see: The obvious one here is the finale dancing scene, but I can’t give it away. Also the way everything seems to bother the main character, and getting a chance to see his reactions, and comebacks to the things that are constantly coming at him. They are both priceless.
Yes, its a Weird Al Yankovic movie. Who’d a thunk it? Well this has Michael Richards in it, Victoria Jackson and a few other recognizable characters (I think even Anthony Geary, well I forget, but it was a while ago). This movie is so silly and yet so funny at the same time. Trust me on this one. Don’t expect too much in the way of plot, but expect to have some really unexpected laughs.
Reasons to see: When they show off the station show lineup, you will pee your pants laughing. Pure Michael Richards high comedy.
